L'altromondo Studios: Rimini's Italo Mecca

L'altromondo Studios first opened in 1967 with the rising popularity of Rimini and Riccione as holiday destinations. It stood out right from the start for its futuristic, science-fiction themed décor. Initially the owner Gilberto Amati wanted to pioneer the concept of a live concert club, with the venue playing host to major American stars including Ray Charles, James Brown and Tina Turner.

However, as the Seventies moved on, and disco music began to proliferate, the club championed the concept of the Superstar DJ and pushed the envelope of club culture, staying open later than any other discotheque. As the Seventies turned to the Eighties, Mario Flores musical project The Creatures took up their residency at L'altromondo and the stage was set for the Italo club revolution. Incorporating lasers, elaborate stage sets, and a spaceship-DJ booth, nights at the Rimini club became as infamous as Studio 54, pioneering the super club phenomenon that would subsequently take hold in Ibiza.

The club is still open today, with a main room playing trance, techno and dance, with two further floors on which more esoteric selections are on offer. Foam parties take place every Wednesday and Friday and there are sunbeds, umbrellas and sand.

Big names dance acts who have played the club recently include Dj Hardwell, Steve Aoki, Afrojack, Deorro, Nicky Romero, Timmy Trumpet . Check their website for an occasional Eighties Revival.
