Dutch producer Ferry Corstens's 1999 remix of U2's 'New Year's Day' didn't get an official release until the rerelease of the 'War Album in 2008. Although white labels made their way into the setlist of DJs like Tiësto, Armin van Buuren and Paul Oakenfold. Bono was reputedly so impressed he contacted Corstens to congratulate him.
Allegedly the remix was commissioned by Island for a Millennial re-release; however, the record company shelved the idea for fear of confusing the public. The band was poised to release 'All That You Can't Leave Behind' in 2000, lead by the single 'Beautiful Day', and such retrospection would taint the U2 brand as purveyors of new music. That said, they are no strangers to remixes.
Paul Oakenfold's 1992 remix of 'Even Better Than The Real Thing', breathed new life into a single that had failed to make the Top 10 on initial release, peaking at number 8 a few months later. Oakenfold went onto support U2 on their 1997 PopMart Tour.
